MONEY MATTERS 2
20.000.000 Turkish
Lira is the biggest bank note.
The other bank notes are of 250,000, 500,000, 1,000,000, 5,000,000 and
10,000,000 lira.
It is cheaper to convert money in Turkey than at home. Using an ATM or a
credit card will often get you the best possible rates; the post and
telephone office (PTT) and banks offer very reasonable rates, too.
Because of Turkey's high inflation rate, it is best to convert money on
daily basis.
It is difficult to specify the money that you can spend per day, however
as a general rule US $20 to $30 or GB £15 to £25 per day can provide you
with additional meals and optional entrances. Should you wish to
purchase souvenirs, of which there is a diverse range, you will have to
budget for these.
A mixture of traveller's cheques for obvious security reasons and cash
are the best forms of currency. Whilst the inflation rate in Turkey is
high ensuring a constant increase in prices, this is largely offset by
the constant devaluation of the Turkish Lira against Western currencies.
Credit cards are also accepted in most of the restaurants, bars and pubs.
MasterCard and Visa are most welcomed; American Express cards work at
some ATMs. Credit cards are also useful for cash advances, which allow
you to withdraw Lira instantly from associated banks and ATMs in Fethiye
Cash cards - popularly called ATM cards - are relatively widespread in
Fethiye. When travelling with Allaround, plan your budget and use the
ATM machines before leaving the main towns.
