ARAXA
(Ören) FETHIYE
This is a Lycian city near the village
of Oren. The name was established by virtue of several inscriptions. It is said
that Leto gave birth to Apollon and Artemis here. While suffering in childbirth,
Leto scraped the hard Lycian soil with her nails and the Xanthos River surfaced.
Hoskin from Britain worked on the ruins
of Araxa and established its name.
Today, about 5-6 kms.before arriving at
Oren, the rock tombs on the left are noteworthy. The acropolis is built on a
rather low point. Numerous lids of gothic sarcophagi lie on the right-hand
side of the road. Except for the huge, polygonal stone walls, there is little
else of the city standing today.
Founded on the Antic Xanthos Stream
ascended, it is 40 km. away from Fethiye. This extraordinary water spring is
subjected to mythological stories. Rampart ruins, Turkish baths and aqueduct of
Bizantium period are remaining from the city, placed within territories of Ören
Village today. How to get there: Hire a car or take a bus from Fethiye Bus
Station
