The Title Deed records of the sixteenth century state that there were numerous beehives and the producers of quality honey had a lot of income, paying tax to the government. In 1856 estate records, the price of cracked wheat was given as 1.5 piastres while that of the honey was 3 piastres, that is honey cost twice as much as the former. In comparison, at present honey is much cheaper and produced in abundance. Beekeeping is considered important in our town. In 1974, the Management of Fethiye Beekeeping and Production Station was established. The main tasks of this Management is training the producers in modern beekeeping methods, as well as ensuring production of queen bees resistant to diseases and harmful factors, and manufacturing modern beehives to meet the requirements of the beekepers. Beekeeping is done on a large scale because the flora is most suitable for pine honey due to the existence of forests in the 54.4% of the territory. There are 75-80 thousand beehives in our town with a yearly honey production of approximately 1596 tons.
