DAIDALA ( Inlice)
There is.a grave to fhe west of
Telmessos, at Inlice, 20 km.s. from Ferhiye, carved into the rock but Left
unfinished, with massive columns and built yn Dorian style. This grave is
purported to have been built by Daedalus. That is why it is. Called. the
Daedalus monument at inlice. A little further on, a for of rock tombs. are
noticed on. a higher, level. The ruins of the city including sarcophagi and the
rock-tombs are scattered around
It is believed that Daedalus and his son
Icarus took off from a cliff where the Inlice plain joins the sea. Icarus, the
son of Daedalus, was a great hunter. One day Icarus asked his father to make
him. A pair wings from the feathers of a. large falcon which he. had hunted,
this father agreed and: made two pairs. of wings, one for himself and the other
for his: son. Thus, the father would I guide the son as they flew. Together,
they took off from a high cliff at Dailada, While they were flying over the
Fethiye Bay, fhe. twelve islands and the inlice plain, Icarus forgot about hjs.
father's warning, "Do not fly too high, the sun would burn your wings and if you
fly too low, the salty water would weigh them down." Overexcited, he wanted to
get close to the sun. He left his father's side and flew high, so much that he
was over the clouds. He even heard the sound of the hoofs of horses drawing the
carriage of Apollon. Icarus went beyond the sun and the sun-carriage. However,
the gum and the beewax melted with the heat of the sun. The feathers came loose
one by one and Icarus fell into the sea.
