EPHESUS
Accompanied by St. John the apostle, Mary came to Ephesus and ended her days in
the peaceful surroundings of Meryeman. The house ýtself is now a consecrated
place of worship and was honored by Pope Paul VII when he came to Ephesus in
1967 and prayed.
All visitors to Ephesus, from the archaeological academic to the merely curious
tourist, are immediately captivated by the immensity and richness of this site.
The overwhelming aura of “ going back in time” will overcome you - be
transported over back to ( not just a couple of decades or even centuries !! )
but 2,000 years.
An area of over 5 kilometres, Ephesus is unmatched by any other similar site
anywhere. In terms of is magnitude and the accepted fact that only one third of
it has ( as yet ) been discovered, the historical value is incalcuable.
Ephesus was a centre of cultural wealth, a premiere trading city and in it’s day,
a model of modern living conveniences. One of only 3 cities to be equipped with
street lighting.
Take a leisurely stroll through the well planned streets. Enter a wealthy Roman
house - marvel at the ingenious bathing facilities, gaze at the columns and
structures of their temples and public buildings. Admire the deviousness of
their connecting underground passage between the library and the brothel (!)
Move on and explore the magnificence of the amphitheatre - with a seating
capacity of 24,000, the theatre is now regularly used as forum for international
artists and singers - Diana Ross, Chris de Burgh and others have performed sell-out
concerts at this magical venue. Climb to upper backmost seats and astonish
yourself, not only with the gorgeous view but also with the fact that, without
raising your voice, you can hold a lucid conversation with someone down on the
stage. The acoustics are amongst the best of any open-air venue worldwide.
