FORESTRY
Pursuant to the Turkicizing of Anatolia,
especially during the period of Beylics, lumber was exported from Marki to
Egypt. The well-known researcher Fellows talks about sales of wood, hazelnuts
and oak acorns. The surface area of forests in our town today is 54.4 % and
164.400 hectares.
Up to 200-300 meters from the shores,
the forests are covered with the Mediterranean maquis (laurel, sandalwood, sage,
thyme, holly oak, oleander). At higher altitudes there are forests of Norway
spruce. At 1200-1800 meters, there are black pines, juniper and styrax trees.
The liquid amber (styrax) trees grow only in South America and between
Marmaris-Fethiye.
More than half of the territory of our
town is covered by forests and there are two forestry departments, namely the
Directorate of Fethiye Forest Management and the Directorate of Kemer Forest
Management. In addition, there are departments of Forest Management at Uzumlu,
Kemer, Seki, Yapraktepe and Akcay. Every unit undertakes the production,
transportation and sales, as well as protection and maintenance of the forests.
