PINARA
On the highway to Kas from Fethiye,
there is a road branching off to the left before arrival at Eşen. The village of
Minare is 5 kms. from the turnoff. After a walk of fifteen minutes, one arrives
at Pinara. The name of the city in the Lycian language is Pinole, meaning round,
as evidenced by the hill here. Pinara is one of the major Lycian cities, with a
vote of three in the League due to its size.
Pinara opened its doors to Alexander the
Great without any resistance. It was later dominated by Pergamum and then, by
virtue of a will, it was turned over to the Romans. The city lost its prominence
by the fifth century B.C. because it was in a remote area. A compact theatre was
unearthed during the excavations. The sarcophagus discovered here is among the
largest ones
from Lycian times. At the summit of the
hill, there is a fortress surrounded by walls and warehouses.
It is 55 km. away from Fethiye at the
feet of Akdağ. It is one of the most biggest cities of Lycia. It is known as the
city in which first beauty competition is organized within the region, and gain
importance with its strange architectural temple devoted to goddess Aphrodite.
Hundreds of "pigeon nest" type prepared public type tombs make Necropolis
unique. How to get there: Some travel agencies run Daily trips to Pınara, if you
want to be little more adventures you can hire a moped for a day (1,5 hour ride)
