FETHIYE PLACES TO VISIT

Blue Lagoon (Oludeniz):

Explore Blue Lagoon (Oludeniz) where the calm crystal water is ideal for swimming and other water sports. Blue Lagoon is located near the famous tourist resort of Fethiye, Belcekýz Beach and protected as one of the natural parks of Turkey.

 

Saklikent Gorge:

High in the mountains above Fethiye rushing torrents cut a narrow gorge / canyon through the mountains, creating Saklýkent Gorge. A cool refuge on hot summer days, Saklýkent Gorge is a favourite picnic spot with rustic restaurants serving delectable fresh trout.     It is 50 km. away from province center and within the territories of Kayadibi Village. It is a natural miracle secreted within 18 km. long, and its height reaches 600 m. from place to place, unique canyon. It is an unique tourism center, so wing mountaineering, trekking, swimming possibilities for people fond of nature with steep rocky mountains, plane trees and clearly flowing ebullient springs.

KAYA KOYU—MOSAICS OF CULTURES :

 Beyond the Fethiye fortress going south, if you follow the road climbing up to the slope some 7 km. you can come to a magnificent lowland where Anatolian Greeks had lived until 1922. Greeks called the town Levissi in the past. Kaya Koyu in the year 1922 during the exchange of Turks in Thrace with Anatolian Greeks was evacuated and the new residents did not take up the existing houses. Kaya become a “Ghost Town” as an abandoned town after 1923.
2 churches, chapels, numerous houses, schools, library, hospital, work—shops and the other structures will be renovated soon according to a project which is made by The Association of Turkish Travel Agencies and The Chamber Of Turkish Architects. After the renovation, Kaya Koyu will serve as the place of “ Piece & Friendship Village” and be protected forever.
 

Tlos  :
It is 45 km. away from Fethiye. It is one of the 6 big cities of Lycia Federal Union and "sports center" of the union. It is known as the city in which Mythological hero, Bellaforonte, known with Pegasus with his horse with flying wings. It is  determined that it is the oldest city of Lycia region and founded before 2000s B. C. via archeological excavations. Its graveyard, established over natural rock of city acropolis, is decorated with most beautiful house type tombs. It is known as king type tomb dated century B. C. in Necropolis is devoted to Bellaforonte.

Cadianda :
The ancient city of Cadianda is located at Uzumlu Village, about 20 Km. from Fethiye. Best samples of Cyclops Walls of the ancient ages, a sport complex, theatre and Heroon like temple type tombs are all worth to see.
Tlos: Located at 28 km. from Fethiye, Tlos is one of the oldest residential areas of Lycia and one of the few cities, which continued its existence up to the 19th Century. Tlos is known as “the sport centre” of Lycian Federation and was the home of mythological winged horse Pegasus and his hero Bellorophonte. Acropolis, temple type tomb of Bellorophonte, Stadium—bath complex, and theatre are some of the structures coming from early periods of Tlos.

Pinara:
“Beauty Center” of Lycians, Pýnara is on the way to Minare Village and can be reached by a short road branching off from the Fethiye—Kas highway. Numerous Pigeon Holes like simple tombs carved on the slope of the Hill and a hearth planned Aphrodite Temple are probably the most interesting remains of Pýnara to see.  

 Xanthos :
Political capital of Lycian Federation, Xanthos is known as the place of people who committed suicide all together for peace and freedom when Persians invaded town in 546 BC. Sir Charles Fellows first discovered Xanthos in 1838 and all relieves and unlikely beautiful Nereid’s Monuments were carried to London—British Museum. The ruins still standing in the city, which is at present location of Kýnýk Village on the road from Fethiye to Kas Town, are splendid samples of the Lycian Civilisation.


Letoon :
Letoon is a holy city, dedicated to Goddess Leto, located at the Kumluova Village and 4 Km. from Xanthos. It is known that all holy ceremonies were held here with the priests of the temples of Leto, Artemis and Apollon.
Oenanda: recently excavated city of Oenanda is located near Incealiler Village, about 88 Km. to Fethiye. British and Turkish archaeologists discovered about 300 scribed tablets of Lycian Epicurean Philosopher Dioghenes.
   
Butterfly Valley:
Pieri Rapos, Euglapia Quadripunctia, Danaus Chtsippus and others… Butterfly Valley is placed at the bottom of deep and sharp of a Valley, which is one of the most beautiful bays around Fethiye. Starting springtime for about 9—10 months more than 40 kinds of butterflies can be watched in the valley.
      
Gemiler Bay & Island :
Following the road leading from Kaya Koyu, you end up at a beautiful beach surrounded by pine and olive trees. Gemiler bay is facing you to the small Island where Byzantine ruins lie tucked among the pines. A Japanese team has carried on archaeological excavations for 10 years.
     

Gunluklu (Kucuk Kargi) :
This site is also operated as a camp-site by the Directorate of National Parks and renewed for its incense (Sytrax) trees (Liquidi-Ambar Orientalis) which grow only in Mugla region.

Katranci :
The Mugla—Fethiye highway branches off to this campsite at a point 15 km. from Fethiye and there are numerous little bays around this spot. Katrancý is an ideal place with camping facilities where pine trees stretching right to the shore.

Gebeler Spa :
The Gebeler Spa is a thermal spring recalling Tlos baths. The spring, that content high Chlorine and sulphate cures many ailments. The 15 meters deep hot water wells are most efficacious remedies for rheumatism, sciatica and skin diseases.
 

BAYS & ISLANDS :
It is not a dream anymore to discover the lovely bays and islands hugging nature and history by a boat in Mediterranean's blue waters. Everybody can arrive by yachts or traditional wooden Gulets into these bays that want to keep their holiday full with beauties, which were known only by the seamen until 40 years ago.

Araxa
Founded on the Antic Xanthos Stream ascended, it is 40 km. away from Fethiye.This extraordinary water spring is subjected to mythological stories. Rampart ruins, Turkish baths and aqueduct of Bizantium period are remaining from the city, placed within  territories of Oren Village today.

Telmessos
Antic Theater Antic sources are mentioning that there was a huge theater at Telmessos.On 1993, during the drilling excavations, performed by Fethiye Museum Directorate, sitting lines of the theater are founded under 3 - 4 meters of soil stratum filled with erosion. As a result of studies continued till 1995, all ruins existing from theater are revealed today. It is understood that early Roman period constructed, IIth century BC repaired theater has 5000 persons capacity and used as an arena during Bizantium period. Relieve project for repair of Telmessos Theater, responding to the 1500 persons' usage with conditions of today, is completed.

Cezayirli Mosque :
 Mosque is constructed by Cezayirli Hasan Pasha on 1791. Hasan Pasha had also acquired various works of art such as Kemer Koprusu (Arc Bridge), Pasha In at Yayla road, Aqueducts within Yaka village to Fethiye.

Main inns :
Main inns of Fethiye; are Ilýca Inn (on the Uzumlu road), Incir Inn, Karatoprak Inn (on Inbecik road), Pasha Inn on Kemer - Seki road, Daydur Inn and Naldoken Inn.

Rocky Tombs :
Likya Rocky Tombs 4th century B. C. monuments from Lycia period within city are drawing interest. These are the tombs excavated to natural rocks, which became the symbol of the city.Amintas, most beautiful and most magnificent one of the tombs, can be reached via lots of  regular stages. This tomb can also be seen from the below plains, and when you come near, the admiration against its greatness increases. At the middle part of the left column, "Herparnias's son Amintas" is written with 4th century B. C. alphabet. Identification of this person is not clearly known. There are lots of tombs, valuable to be seen, within the province. Most important one of these is the one which belongs to Lycia period. There is a strange appearance of the tomb ascending within sea. There is a rectangular, wooden chords reminding embcarves and a gothic style cover with arc on the two layered front side. Both sides of the cover is embossed with frisks picturing wars, and it is thought that these are belonging to the life of the person.

Fethiye Castle :
It is thought that castle ascending at the south of the city belongs to knights of Saint John.There are two simple and small rocky tombs on the eastern face of the hill, excluding a cistern with indefinite history and a few writings carved to the walls.

Faralya :
Sweet coastal village at the end of Kýdrak road, is a resort place for wanderers with its wild nature, appropriate climate, friendly people and its attractiveness.      

Yakapark :

Gocek :
It is 30 km. away from province, and on the Fethiye - Mugla highway. It is an unique tourism heaven with its numerous  bays and islands, near ruin places and surrounding pine grove hills besides its natural harbor.
